I could not imagine an Apple executive wanting to carry an gold colored iPhone. To create one because the market wants is a huge deviation from Apple's core values. If they do, the stock price might go up for a while, but Apple would have become Microsoft.
Given how popular gold is as an aftermarket option for color-treatments, and how many gold cases there are - including but certainly not limited to the Asian markets - it could simply be the decision to offer supply where there's demand.imore.com
